WOMAN’S WEEK CELEBRATIONS -2019

The ‘Woman’s Week Celebrations’ of 2019, was marked by an “Out Reach Program” which was conducted at Govt. Girl’s Tribal Welfare Residential  School, Golagamudi, S.P.S.R Nellore District. It was celebrated from 5th March 2019 to 8thMarch 2019 in the morning hours (9.30 A.M to 1.00 PM), in the school premises. It comprised of Dental Health Screening, Dental Treatments, Medical Health Screening, Dental Health Education, Educating the Girl Child, Display of Self Defence Skills, enacting Role Plays and conducting Competitions for the 7th, 8th & 9th class students. It ended with a valedictory function held on the morning of 8th March 2019.  Around 232 students belonging to 7th, 8th & 9th classes participated in the program. All students were screened for Dental & Medical Problems and referral cards were distributed. About 15 students were given dental treatments like Zinc Eugenol dressings for deep carious lesions, extraction of retained and mobile deciduous teeth and scaling and oral hygiene instructions. ‘Dental Health Education’ with special emphasis on Maintenance of Oral hygiene, Dental Caries diagnosis & prevention, ill effects of Tobacco Smoking & Chewing, Alcohol abuse, Awareness about Oral Cancer etc was taught using Flip Charts, Classroom teaching & Flash Cards. Similarly short documentaries emphasizing on hygiene practices during menstrual cycle, awareness about ‘Good touch’ & ‘Bad touch’, Good behavioral practices etc were screened, under ‘Educating the Girl Child’ program. Both Dental Health Education and Educating the Girl child were held for each class of students separately. A professional Karate teacher along with two of his skilled girl students displayed various self defense moves against chain snatching, kidnapping, stalking and hitting and also demonstrated all the strokes step by step. Importance of learning self defense skills was also conveyed to them. Competitions like elocution on short topics like dental caries, oral hygiene maintenance etc and quiz program on girl’s behavior and hygiene practices etc were also held. The valedictory function started with a short speech by Dr.Vandana Raghunath, WEC Chairperson, NDCH. The students were thanked for participating, advised about dental health care and personality development. The principal was requested to send children who had been given referral cards for treatments to NDCH by vans provided by NDCH. It was also conveyed that dental screening camps would be conducted on regular basis as the school was adopted under WEC, NDCH. The Principal Mr.Surendra and all the school staff (both the teaching & non-teaching) were also thanked for permitting and co-operating with us all through the program. Dental tooth brushes (sponsored by NDCH), tooth pastes (sponsored by Colgate Palmolive Ltd) along with women’s kit (sponsored by WEP, NDCH & Mrs.A.Vani (Vamsi Textiles)) and biscuits & candies were distributed to all the students.
The members of WEC, NDCH, Prof & Head (Cons) Dr.Lavanya and Asst Professors Dr.Sravya, Dr.Samatha, Dr.Swetha, Dr.Sukrutha, Dr.Shiva Priya, Dr.Seetha Balaji & Dr.Sandhya and 25 (Interns & Postgraduate students) girls combined, volunteered for the program which was very successful. The entire program was planned and executed successfully under the able guidance of Dr.Deepthi, Asst Professor, Public Health Dentistry and Dr.Vandana Raghunath, Chairperson of Woman Empowerment Committee (WEC) and Professor & Head, Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology & Microbiology, NDCH.
Further, on 8th March 2019 on the event of International Women’s Day, WEC, NDCH organized two events. One was “Blood Donation Camp” in association with NSS Unit of NDCH, in the Dept of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. It was inaugurated by the women staff of NDCH at 9.30 AM. Around 86 members were screened for eligibility and 59 candidates (belonging to both staff & student community of NDCH) donated blood. It was a successful event.
Yet another occasion was cake cutting, where all the girl students and women staff of NDCH gathered in the mini auditorium and celebrated. Following which all the women non-teaching staff were served lunch.
All the Medical, Dental, Nursing & Physiotherapy institutions came together and celebrated “International Women’s Day” under the aegis of “Narayana Medical Institutions”. It was held on 8th March 2019, in Gray’s Lecture Hall in Narayana Medical College from 2.30 p.m. to 5p.m. The chief guests invited were Mrs.P.J.Sudha, Senior Civil Judge, and Dr.T.Lakshmi, CMO, IRCS Cancer Hospital, Podalkur, Nellore. The other dignitaries who graced the occasion were Dr.S.P.Rao, Dean, NMCH, Dr.Ajay Reginald, Principal, NDCH, Dr.Shiv kumar, Dean, NDCH, Dr.(Mrs).Indira, Dean, Narayana College Of Nursing, Dr.Tirupathy, Principal, Physiotherapy College and Dr.Hymavathy, Prof & Head, Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. It started with a prayer, followed by lighting of the inaugural lamp. Dr.Hymavathy spoke on the importance of “International Women’s Day” & its theme “#Balance for Better”. Dr.Jyothi, Professor, Community Medicine introduced the 1st guest speaker Mrs.P.Sudha, who explained about Women by-laws quoting some cases from her experience.  Dr.Vandana Raghunath, Prof & Head, Oral Pathology, NDCH introduced the 2nd guest speaker Dr.T.Laxmi. Madam spoke on “Cancer Awareness and Breast self examination”. She emphasized on avoiding consumption of adulterated food in the modern day lifestyle eating habits and about the common cancers affecting women and how one can be vigilant about it. Both were honored with shawls & presented with Mementoes. Dr Hymavathy & Dr.T. Laxmi also awarded the Interns & PG student volunteers, NDCH who had participated in the “Women’s Week Out reach program” with certificates and gifts. The nursing students who had won in various competitions held as part of “International Women’s Day” were also presented with gifts and certificates. The program concluded with vote of thanks by Mrs. S.Jayanthi, Principal, Sree Narayana Nursing College and singing of our National Anthem.
